Water - The new Royal Children's Hospital

Saving water

The following water saving measures will result in a minimum 20% reduction in water demand:

  • Rainwater will be collected from at least 75% of all new roof areas and storage tanks will be sized to collect 85% of run-off from the collection areas.
  • A blackwater treatment plant will recycle rain and wastewater for reuse in toilet flushing, in cooling plant, watering internal gardens and Royal Park.
  • Water efficient showerheads, taps, toilets and urinals will be used throughout the new building to help reduce the amount of water used.
  • A water efficient landscape irrigation system will ensure we only use water when we need to by using automatic timers with rainwater or moisture control override.
  • No evaporative cooling.
  • Water metering for all major water systems with leak detection.
