The new hospital

Why a new hospital

The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) has provided the best care to children from Victoria and around the world for 140 years, and is recognised internationally as a leading centre for research and education through its partnerships with the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and the University of Melbourne.

In 2005 the Victorian State Government announced a new RCH would be built to the west of the existing hospital so that the best quality care could be provided into the future. The new RCH recognises:

  • that sick children are cared for very differently compared to when the existing RCH was built in 1963
  • the critical importance of a stronger focus on teaching, research and health prevention than in the past
  • the need for a facility that can support families and carers and allow them to stay with and help care for their children
  • Victoria’s growing population requires a new hospital with expanded facilities
  • the co-location of Australia's largest child health research institute, the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, will help to improve clinical care.
