Stage 2 works

Stage 2 works - The new Royal Children's Hospital project

When does Stage 2 start?
Stage 2 of the project starts in early 2012.

What does Stage 2 involve?
Stage 2 of the project includes:

  • demolition of much of the existing hospital (only two buildings will remain)
  • construction of additional underground car park spaces, a hotel, gym, small supermarket, additional childcare facilities, consulting suites and other general retail outlets
  • reinstatement of the existing hospital site as parkland.

What are the timelines for Stage 2?
Demolition will commence in early 2012 and is expected to be complete by August 2013. After this, parkland reinstatement can commence. Stage 2 construction works will be completed by the end of 2014.

Are there any more stages after the Stage 2 works are finished?
No. Stage 2 is the final stage of the new RCH project.

Was the hotel part of the original plans?
The hotel was part of the Children’s Health Partnership winning bid for the new hospital, which was accepted and announced publicly in November 2007.

Where did the idea of a hotel come from?
The desirability of having a hotel on-site came out of the staff and community consultation process that was undertaken at the beginning of the project.

Who will use the hotel?
Having a hotel on-site provides an additional accommodation option for extended families to stay within close distance to a sick child. It also provides accommodation and conference facilities for the many national and international clinical, research and education professionals who visit the hospital.

How much will the accommodation cost and are there plans for priority bookings?
The hotel is proposed to have a 3.5-4 star rating and room rates are expected to reflect this level of service. At this stage no discussions have taken place surrounding priority bookings.

How big will the hotel be?
The hotel is planned to have approximately 100 rooms. It will be five storeys high. By way of comparison, the Research Precinct Building (which is being retained) is ten storeys high (with floors from ground to level nine).

Where will the entrance to the hotel be?
The entrance will be on Flemington Road.

Will alcohol be available at the hotel?
The serving of alcohol will be permitted in some areas associated with the hotel, such as in the restaurant and lounge area, and through room service and mini bars in hotel rooms for guests.

The sale of packaged takeaway alcohol is strictly prohibited.

Have the plans for the car park changed?
In 2011 a decision was made to extend the Stage 2 car park underground by approximately 30 metres (amounting to approximately 0.3 ha in total area). The underground extension significantly improves the design of the car park, and has no impact on the parkland above.

Does the car park have emergency exits into Royal Park?
No. There are no emergency exits into the park.
