Energy - The new Royal Children's Hospital

Saving Energy

The following energy efficient measures are expected to result in an overall 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (compared with a conventional hospital):

  • A 10% reduction in energy use (compared with a conventional hospital).
  • Lighting, heating and cooling systems will be energy efficient.
  • The building will be orientated towards the north, making good use of the sun.
  • A 2.8MW gas-fired cogeneration plant will be included. It will produce power equivalent to the use of 447 households. Electricity will be generated from burning gas rather than coal, and the heat produced during the generation of electricity will be captured and used for heating, domestic hot water and cooling.
  • Chilled beams will be used for cooling in the majority of patient areas. Chilled water runs through beams and, when combined with 100% fresh air, will provide gentle radiant cooling in patient areas.
  • Solar panels on the roof will generate approximately 40% of hot water to ward areas.
  • A biomass boiler will help to heat the new hospital.
