Education and research - The new Royal Children's Hospital

Education and research

The RCH, with partners the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics, does a lot to find out why kids get sick and teach others how to make them better.

  • By staying in Parkville, the RCH will continue to be surrounded by Victoria’s largest medical research and technology precinct.
  • The new hospital will provide organisational wide education facilities and programs in a dedicated Integrated Education Centre, providing a greater emphasis on interaction.
  • With a trend towards drawing and sharing information across the campus, nationally and internationally, the new 3000m2 Integrated Education Centre will meet the needs of all education programs, courses, workshops and conferences for medical, nursing and allied health.
  • The new Integrated Education Centre will include a 250-seat tiered lecture theatre with function facilities, meeting rooms and separate student and staff lounges. The theatre will be easily accessible for both staff and external users.
  • The Integrated Education Centre will facilitate interaction and will be supported by the Library, Archives and Education Resource Centre.
  • The Integrated Education Centre will be easily accessible from the new hospital’s ‘main street’.
  • Wards and departments will have their own rooms that could be used for tutorials and meeting.
  • The new RCH will include twice as much space for research as in the current facility.
  • The design of the purpose-built research facility will be flexible, with the ability to respond to emerging research trends. Its modern layout will result in greater efficiencies.
  • It will have lots of natural light and great views of the park.
  • There will be good connections between research and clinical areas to minimise travel and improve communication.
