Construction - The new Royal Children's Hospital project

Construction update, November 2011

  • MRI in lower ground floor completed and now live.
  • Landscape maintenance works commenced and ongoing.
  • Deliveries of hospital equipment are ongoing and commissioning is taking place.
  • IMRIS substantially completed, final commissioning taking place, magnet now live and training has commenced.
  • All car parks fully operational.
  • Central Sterilising Services Department (CSSD) fully operational.
  • There are currently 25 construction workers on site.

  • All main access roads to the front of the project are complete and traffic systems commissioned.
  • All paving at the front of the project is complete.
  • Works to temporary tunnel link between the old facility and the new are complete. Equipment test runs have commenced with mock patient moves happening weekly.
  • MRI in lower ground floor completed.
  • Landscape maintenance works have commenced and are ongoing.
  • ‘The Great Garden’ court is now complete.
  • Deliveries of hospital equipment is ongoing and commissioning is taking place.
  • Q7 process commenced.

  • Installation of Creature in Main Street complete.
  • Installation of all mobile artwork in Main Street complete.
  • All main access roads to the front of the project completed.

  • All external lighting commissioned and signed off.
  • Works to the temporary tunnel between the old facility and new are all complete and test runs have commenced.
  • Main entrance external signage completed.
  • Installation of MRI in lower ground floor completed and ready for use.
  • Aquarium has been filled and first batch of fish have arrived. More fish arrived recently and are being acclimatised at present.
  • Fire systems complete and tested.
  • Security systems complete.
  • Certificate of occupancy has been received.
  • Technical Completion achieved on 21 September 2011.
  • RCH/MCRI staff training and orientation commenced.
  • Retail fit-out works substantially complete.
  • Landscape maintenance works have commenced and are ongoing.

  • Artwork/graphics to all buildings are substantially complete.
  • The application of synthetic grass to all courtyards is complete.
  • All main access roads to the front of the project are complete.
  • All paving at the front of the project is complete.
  • 100 per cent of the site hoarding has been removed.
  • 100 per cent of green screen fencing to external areas has been installed.
  • All statutory signage has been installed (fire related signage posted near the fire hose reels and fire doors).
  • 95 per cent of way finding signage is installed.
  • Works to tunnel link between the old and new facilities is complete.
  • External signage to main entrance has commenced.
  • Mobiles (artwork) installed in Main Street.
  • Front hoardings removed and temporary hoarding in place ready to be released for the technical completion date of 21 September 2011.

  • The third stage of cleaning has been completed prior to Q6 functional inspections commencing (there are four cleaning stages).
  • Base building works on the beanbag cinema facility are complete. Fit out has started and is progressing well.
  • Works to the meerkat enclosure are generally complete.
  • Siemens completed onsite installing Cath Lab machinery to Level 3, East Building.
  • Helipad fire testing completed.
  • All hydrant hose reels tested and live.
  • All sprinkler systems tested and live.
  • Heating and chilled water is now operational.

Construction update, May 2011

  • Final coat of membrane to the helipads is complete and aviation lights have been fitted.
  • All Q5, functional room inspections complete to all buildings.
  • Pressure testing of fire compartments has commenced.
  • Fire integration testing commenced.
  • Internal statutory signage is almost complete across the whole facility.
  • Landscaping is progressing.
  • IMRIS area – Internal finish is proceeding in line with MRI installation works.
  • Central Sterilising Services Department (CSSD) supplier, Getinge, have commenced commissioning.
  • Theatre air flow control systems have been commissioned.
  • Fire compartment testing to Inpatient Unit (North Building) and Lower Ground is complete.
  • Security system (facility wide) commissioning ongoing. Commissioning comprises of setting up the area and then activating the security system.
  • Work has commenced on the Melbourne Fire Brigade emergency route.
  • Synthetic turf installation to courtyards has commenced.
  • Installation of play equipment, shade sails and furniture in all courtyard areas has commenced.
  • There are currently 250 construction workers on site.

  • Domestic hot water is now being tested throughout the building.
  • Final coat of membrane to the helipads is complete and aviation lights fitted.
  • Final paint almost applied to all of the buildings. Quality assurance is commencing on paint works.
  • All quality assurance and functional room inspections are complete.
  • Hollow core beams have been installed to the link area between Stage 1 and 2.
  • Pressure testing of fire compartments has commenced and is ongoing.
  • Pressure balancing of the Theatre and some labs commenced.
  • Secondary chilled water balanced.
  • Fire integration testing has started.
  • The installation of internal signage has commenced.
  • Installation of a rubber finish to planter boxes in play areas has commenced.
  • Works on the walkways concrete bases has started.
  • Concrete structures for all water features have been formed.
  • Landscaping is progressing.
  • There are currently 300 construction workers on site.

Construction update, March 2011

  • Final painting has commenced for all buildings and painting of the Inpatient Unit is complete.
  • Air conditioning is now installed and functioning.
  • Medical pendants have been fitted throughout the site and testing has been completed.
  • Domestic hot water access is now being tested throughout the buildings.
  • All buildings have undergone a builders clean, to allow testing of mechanical services.
  • Functional room inspections (defect inspections) have commenced across the project.
  • Services upgrade completed for levels six, seven and ten of the Research Precinct Building.
  • The internal membrane of all roof top plantrooms is completed.
  • First coat of membrane to the helipads is complete and aviation lights are fitted.
  • There are currently 350 construction workers on site.

Construction update, February 2011

  • Joinery has been installed to the ground floor entry areas of the main reception and the emergency department.
  • The auditorium has been fitted out with joinery and seats.
  • Work stations have been completed to Level 5 of the West Building.
  • Fixed joinery completed in all buildings.
  • Central plant equipment has been installed and is being tested.
  • Kitchen in basement 2 is now complete and all kitchen equipment installed.
  • All electrical zones have now been energised.
  • The fit out of the Intra Operative MRI (IMRIS) area is progressing well with radiation shielding completed and installation of services underway.
  • 95 per cent of functional room inspections have been completed throughout the project.
  • Basement car parks B3 and B2 have been sealed and line marked.
  • Good progress has been made on all external areas with membrane and structural retaining walls now completed.
  • There are currently approximately 350 construction workers on site.

Construction update, December 2010 / January 2011

  • Vinyl/carpeting is now complete in all areas.
  • Stone flooring and timber panelling has now been completed to the Main Street area.
  • Services commissioning is well underway with all major plant items in the process of being commissioned.
  • The main roof top plantroom has been energised, commissioning of plantroom is underway and power to all units is now available.
  • Medical pendants have been fitted throughout the site with commissioning and final fit off being under taken.
  • The delivery and installation of furniture, fittings and equipment has now commenced.
  • Workstations are being installed to Level 5 of the West Building.
  • 97 per cent of the electrical zones have been energised over the entire building.
  • Mechanical ventilation throughout the project is being balanced.
  • Tiling to the hydro pool walls and floors has been completed.
  • The fit out of the Intra Operative MRI (IMRIS) area is continuing well, with the structural steel completed and the specialist IMRIS personnel now working within the space fitting it out.
  • Earthworks to the old site shed area and future courtyard areas has commenced.
  • There are currently approximately 400 construction workers onsite.

Construction update, November 2010

  • Vinyl/carpeted flooring completed to all occupied spaces.
  • The commissioning of the tri-generator within the basement has started.
  • Primary loops of the cooling and heating water has commenced.
  • The main roof top plant room has been energised and commissioning of plant room air handling units (AHU’s) have commenced.
  • The installation of medical pendants to the Level 3 theatre area is underway.
  • Lab joinery has now been completed to Level 4 and Level 5 of the East Building.
  • Installation of workstations has commenced on Level 5 of the West Building.
  • 85 per cent of the electrical zones have now been energised.
  • 95 per cent of the stone flooring has been completed to the ‘Street’ area.
  • Tiling to the hydro pool walls and floors is finished.
  • Fit out of the Intra Operative MRI (IMRIS) area has started with the Magnetic Radiation Shielding and structural steel work having commenced.
  • There approximately 800 construction workers onsite.

Construction update, October 2010

  • The main roof on the plant room is now 90 per cent complete with energisation of the area about to commence.
  • 75 per cent of the stone flooring has now been laid in the Main Street.
  • Vinyl flooring has been laid to all clinical areas over the entire project. Main corridors will be laid over the coming weeks.
  • Carpet has now been laid to Level 5 of the West Building.
  • Installation of workstations has now commenced in both buildings.
  • Permanent power has been energised up to Level 5 of the East Building and Level 3 of the West Building.
  • Carpet and vinyl works have commenced on the lecture theatre in the West Building, with the seats due to arrive early next month.
  • Tiling to the hydro pool walls and floor has now commenced.
  • Road works to the Flemington Road intersection are complete.
  • There are approximately 800 construction workers onsite.

  • The link bridge between the existing Research Precinct Building and the new facility has been installed.
  • Installation of the façade petals commenced along the West Building.
  • The last of the internal street ceiling scaffold has been removed.
  • 60 per cent of the stone flooring has now been laid in the main street.
  • Vinyl has now been laid to all theatre areas of Level 3 and 80 per cent completed to both Level 4 and 5 of the East Building.
  • Lab benches are now being installed to Levels 4 and 5 of the East Building.
  • The Furniture, Fittings and Equipment (FFE) installation has commenced to the Central Services Sterilising Department on Level 3.
  • Permanent power has been energised up to Level 3 of the East Building.
  • Floor finishes have commenced up to Level 4 of the West Building.
  • Internal wall panelling has now commenced to the Level 1 lecture theatre of the West Building.
  • Architect inspections have been completed to the entire of Inpatient Unit Building with levels Ground to 4 locked off.
  • External waterproofing of external slabs has commenced, landscaping to the forecourts is to commence in the next reporting period.
  • Roads works to Flemington Road intersection are almost complete.
  • Fit out to the new research facility to Level 8 and Level 9 is nearing completion.

Construction update, August 2010



  • The Research Precinct Building team installed a major ductwork riser on to the external of the façade linking Level 8 and 9 with the roof plant area.
  • Research Precinct Building lifts are installed and are currently utilised as builder’s lifts.
  • Plaster board wall linings are now complete up to and including of Level 4 of both buildings.
  • Stage 3 of the street internal ceiling linings is now complete and removal of the scaffolding has commenced.
  • The laying of Street stone flooring has now commenced to the Stage 2 area.
  • Floor finishes are being installed to Level 3 and 4 of the East Building.
  • Floor finishes have commenced to Level 2 of the West Building.
  • The main plant room to the east roof is approximately 65 per cent installed and the west roof plant area is approximately 55 per cent installed.
  • Power is now on to the central chiller and boiler plant rooms on B2 car park. Commissioning of the plant areas now underway.
  • After recently peaking at over 2,100 personnel, the project workforce has currently sits at approximately 1,900 persons onsite.

  • Marking a major milestone for the project, all tower cranes have now been dismantled. Rosie, the last of the nine tower cranes, came down over the weekend of 31 July/1 August.
  • Permanent power has been switched on to all Levels of the Inpatient Unit building, basement plantroom areas and Level 1 of the East Building.
  • Vinyl flooring is being laid to Levels 2, 3 and 4 of the East Building. Installation of carpet tiles has commenced up to Level 1 and 2 of the East Building.
  • Joinery is being installed on the ground floor, Level 3 and Level 4 of the East Building and to Level 1 of the West Building.
  • The final wall linings are being hung to Levels 4 and 5 of the East Building and to Level 5 of the West Building.
  • The street internal ceiling linings are now halfway complete and scaffolding has been removed.
  • Street stone flooring has now commenced and is one quarter complete.
  • Level 3 theatres are now complete from a plastering point of view, and vinyl floor covering has commenced.
  • Research Precinct Building vinyl flooring is well under way.
  • Façade petals to the western building are now nearing completion, with over 85 per cent of the petals installed.
  • Works are nearing completion on the front and main entry façades.
  • The project workforce has peaked, reaching in excess of 2,100 personnel.
  • The RCH project received the Master Builders Victoria Award for the Environmental Health and Safety management in the annual Master Builders Awards.

  • The major milestone for the project over the last reporting period is that all the builder’s lifts have been removed from site, and the project is now down to one crane.
  • The Inpatient Unit (IPU) has now been fully inspected in all areas and rooms. Permanent power has been switched on up to Level 4 of the IPU and level 3 of the Basement building.
  • Vinyl flooring is being laid over the lower ground and Level 1 of the east building - over 60 per cent of the total vinyl on the project has now been laid.
  • Installation of carpet tiles has commenced up to Level 1 of the east building.
  • Joinery is being installed on the ground floor and levels 1 and 2 of the east building.
  • High level services such as air-conditioning and sprinkler systems are now complete for the east and west buildings.
  • Plasterboard wall linings are now being applied to Level 4 of the east and west buildings.
  • Stage 1 of ‘The Street’ internal ceiling lining is now complete and scaffolding has been removed.
  • Level 3 theatres sheeting is 80 per cent complete, with seal coating and vinyl to commence in zone 1 and 2 within the next two weeks.
  • Application of façade petals to the western building is now nearing completion with over 70 per cent of the petal installation now complete.
  • Works on the front entry façade to the emergency department have commenced.
  • The project workforce has peaked, reaching in excess of 2,000 personnel.

Construction update, May 2010



  • Major milestone achieved with permanent power now being established.
  • The Inpatient Unit now has lights and power to Level 1, with power to the remaining floors being turned on over the next few weeks.
  • Power has also been established to all the permanent lifts.
  • The Inpatient Unit vinyl has been completed with the last of joinery and services fit off being completed to Level 5.
  • The first stage of ceilings has progressed. Scaffolding has been erected to 24m in height at the northern end of the project, and work is moving towards the southern end. The scaffold will be dismantled over the next two weeks.
  • The installation of the main fume stack risers has been completed over to both the helipad pad area and south end of the project.
  • The Research Precinct Building is progressing well, with all major in ground works being completed. The new lift shaft adjacent to the Research Precinct Building is being erected up to Level 6, with expected completion of the shaft within the next two weeks, allowing for fitout of the lift to commence.
  • Structural steel support framing for the petals has commenced so as to enable the petal installation to continue along the West building.
  • The East building joinery has commenced to Level 1 following the vinyl installation throughout this level.
  • Level 3 theatres are now well underway with several of the theatres' plasterboard having been hung.
  • High level services are nearing completion to Level 5 of the East building. The main plant room is also well underway with 60 plumbers now working on the plant area.
  • Structural steel to the façade street ends has also been completed, with glazing commenced to the northern end.
  • The West Building wall frames have been completed to Level 3, with high level services being roughed in to Level 4 and wall sheeting now commencing onLevel 2.
  • Approx 1,900 construction workers are now working on the project.

  • Construction continues to progress well. The project still has in excess of 1,600 construction workers onsite.
  • The Inpatient Unit building is nearing completion with all but Level 5 of the building having had vinyl laid.
  • Installation of the furniture, fixtures and equipment items with the medical service pendants has started in the Level 3 Paediatric Intensive Care unit.
  • The East building is progressing well, with wall framing being erected to Level 5 and vinyl flooring to Level 1.
  • Work on the main plantroom has started with high level pipework and duct installation to the underside of the Helipad.
  • The West building has wall framing up to Level 3 and high level services up to Level 5. The façade has progressed well, with 90 per cent currently installed. Installation of external window ‘petals’ has commenced along the West Building façade.
  • The roof over the ‘The Street’ has been completed with erection of scaffolding commencing at the northern end.
  • Installation of structural steel to the ends of ‘The Street’ façade has commenced.
  • The Research Precinct building works continue, with the lift shaft installation commencing to the western end of the building, and services culverts nearly completed to the southern end of the building.
  • Power is expected to be turned on in late May.

  • The external facades are pushing ahead on both East and West buildings with 98 per cent of all glass for the project now cut and shipped.
  • Glazing is now up to Level 6 on the East and West buildings.
  • Structural steel roof framing is 95 per cent complete, East building plant room metal deck roof is 85 per cent complete and wall cladding is 80 percent complete. West building plant room metal deck roof is 90 per cent complete, while wall cladding is 60 per cent complete.
  • Internal Street roof framing is 80 per cent complete, 60 per cent has been glazed.
  • Fit-off has commenced on Levels 4 and 5 of the IPU and vinyl is now being laid to Level 5.
  • Lower ground walls are currently being sheeted to the Emergency Short Stay Unit (ESSU) and Imaging area - wall framing is 98 per cent built to the whole of lower ground. Grinding of the floors has started and sheeting of the Emergency Department has commenced.
  • Wall framing is complete to the Level 3 theatre of the East building, sheeting to commence after Easter. Level 4 high level services 80 per cent complete, as is wall framing. Level 5 wall framing is 5 per cent complete.
  • Level 4 of the West building full height walls are complete and sheeting of walls has commenced on the ground.
  • Internal Lift 24 is ready to operate as a builders lift.
  • Central plant rooms are nearing completion in regards to installation of equipment, with fit-off still being undertaken. Pumps are 50 per cent wired.
  • Research Precinct Building Stage Two of culvert completed, demolition works also completed, excavation works commenced for the ground slab and the sheeting of walls is progressing on levels 8 and 9.
  • Approx 1600 workers are currently onsite with a revised expected peak of approx 2200 expected within the next 4-6 months.

  • Internal lifts 20-23 are now in operation as builders’ lifts.
  • Central plant rooms are nearing completion in regards to installation of equipment with fit-off still being undertaken.
  • Approx 1,600 workers are currently onsite with a revised expected peak of approximately 2,200 expected within the next four to six months.
