The new RCH will be located next door to the existing hospital in Parkville, Victoria’s largest medical, research, education and technology precinct. Construction is running to schedule and the new hospital is due to open in late 2011.
It will feature: |
- more single-bed rooms, neonatal cots and operating theatres than the existing hospital
- an Integrated Education Centre for medical, nursing and allied health education
- twice as much research space as is currently available for the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute
- a 2,000 space underground car park (almost doubling existing parking)
- unprecedented levels of natural light and great parkland views
- 500 secure bike parking spaces
- a two-storey aquarium and various interactive Scienceworks displays
- a ‘main street’ including new additional shops, cafes and amenities for patients, families and staff
- a 90 room 3.5 star hotel for on-site accommodation (Stage 2 of the redevelopment)
- environmental features to ensure it is Australia’s greenest hospital.

The $1 billion new project is being delivered as public private partnership (PPP) by the Department of Health, the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Health Partnership consortium.
The design has been guided by a set of principles that are based on consultation with RCH staff and patients and their families, and informed by the investigation of Australian and international best practice. These guiding principles are:
|
- child and family centered
- operationally efficient and flexible
- safety in design
- decisions supported by evidence
- partnerships and linkages
- promoting a learning environment.
